Stephanie Strom of the NY Times took a look at philanthropy and advocacy recently in her article, "SOME PHILANTHROPISTS ARE NO LONGER CONTENT TO WORK QUIETLY".
While comparisons to situations the Gates Foundation faces are often challenging for most nonprofits, comments from Patty Stonesifer, former CEO, ring true to many of us in the field . . "the problems that the foundation was seeking to conquer were so enormous that success required involving government. “The issues we care about,” Ms. Stonesifer said, “are issues that require public engagement, so advocacy is kind of baked into the way we do things.”
