Arabella Philanthropic Investment Advisors with offices in NY, Washington and Chicago has released their 2009 list of “High-Impact Giving Opportunities: Philanthropy that Makes a Difference, developed in consultation with an independent panel made up of opinion leaders, foundation and association executives and business leaders. “These urgent yet under-recognized issues allow donors to invest wisely . . [and are] ones which most donors will not have considered and, for those interested in these issues, offer unique opportunities for impact."

One of the items on the 2009 list is:

CLIMATE CHANGE DEFENSE: Building a Green-Collar Workforce
"Both climate mitigation and adaptation create jobs that will need to be filled quickly. Researchers have identified 22 sectors offering green employment opportunities. The battle against climate change will require an army. Those on the ground will need sophisticated skills to implement the technological innovations developed to reverse this disaster in the making. Yet the infrastructure – the classes, certificate programs and standards – to train a new green labor force has yet to be built, a fact that could cause dramatic delays in worldwide progress.

Both mitigation – addressing causes of climate change – and adaptation – dealing with its impacts – create jobs that will need to be filled quickly. These low-, medium- and high-skilled positions will span agriculture, manufacturing, construction and other service-related industries yet to be built. Researchers have identified twenty-two sectors offering green employment opportunities, yet not one is sufficiently prepared . . . "
